If you’re a sports coach, there is more you need to think about than how to help your players succeed in the game. Along with helping them succeed with life, it’s also important to help them succeed in maintaining top-notch smiles. Unfortunately, many oral injuries occur during sports participation, so it’s best to teach your players how to care for their teeth, gums, and mouths while they are active. Our dentist, Dr. Purvesh Malaviya, would like to help you do so by sharing some tips.

Our dentist first encourages you to ask your players to wear mouthguards while they are practicing and playing in games. This is very important, especially if the sport is high in contact (like basketball, football, and soccer). If they don’t protect their smiles, there is a good chance they could suffer an oral injury if a hard, forceful object (like an elbow, knee, or helmet) hits their mouth. It’s important to keep their smiles healthy and strong as much as possible so they can avoid an emergency.

The second tip is to have your players have their dentists’ contact information handy during practices and games, whether it’s in their cell phones or in a notebook in their backpack. That way if a dental emergency does happen, they (or a teammate or coach) could call the dentist, explain the situation, and schedule an emergency appointment. This can help increase the chances of saving the tooth.
