While you might not think it at first, simple things can potentially cause a chip on one of your teeth. This could come from something obvious, like nervously nibbling on stray desktop objects or crunching down on ice. You could also be at increased risk of suffering a chip if unresolved stress causes you to unconsciously grind your teeth at night.

If you do suffer a chipped tooth, you shouldn’t procrastinate seeking treatment from Dr. Purvesh Malaviya. As time goes by, microscopic bacterial residue could build up in the deep recesses of the damaged tooth enamel. This could cause a dangerous cavity to form in an already distressed tooth.

If the chip is on the biting surface of the tooth, or if a large area of tooth enamel has been compromised, we might recommend having the tooth restored with a dental crown. This involves creating a near-perfect replica of the original tooth enamel layer. The crown itself is hollow and will eventually be anchored on an abutment that is formed out of the dentin, pulp, and root of the tooth.

Once the abutment has been prepared, your dentist will create a detailed impression of the area. This will be sent to a dental lab where your new crown will be created. In the interim, a temporary crown will be cemented over the abutment to protect it.

We will call you back in for a follow-up appointment when the final crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will then be cemented securely onto the abutment.
